We believe the African stores directory should be accessible to everyone. This statement outlines how we work towards that goal and what to do if you encounter any barriers.

1. Our Commitment

africanstores.co.uk is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone and applying the relevant accessibility standards to make our platform as inclusive as possible. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.

2. Measures We Take

We take the following measures to ensure accessibility on africanstores.co.uk: We include accessibility as part of our design and development process. We provide continual accessibility training for our team. We conduct regular accessibility audits using both automated tools and manual testing. We assign clear accessibility goals and responsibilities within our team. We use semantic HTML markup to ensure proper document structure. We test with screen readers and keyboard-only navigation.

3. Accessibility Features

Our platform includes the following accessibility features: Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements can be accessed and operated using a keyboard. Skip links: A "Skip to main content" link is provided at the top of each page. Text alternatives: Images and non-text content include descriptive alternative text. Colour contrast: We maintain a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Resizable text: Content remains readable and functional when text is resized up to 200%. Focus indicators: Visible focus indicators are provided for all interactive elements. Form labels: All form inputs are properly labelled for screen reader users. Error identification: Form errors are clearly identified and described in text. Consistent navigation: Navigation mechanisms are consistent across the platform.

4. Known Limitations

Despite our efforts, some areas of the platform may not yet be fully accessible. Known limitations include: Store photos uploaded by store owners may not always have descriptive alternative text. We provide guidance to store owners on writing good alt text, but cannot guarantee compliance. Some interactive map features may have limited keyboard accessibility. We provide text-based alternatives for all location information. Older PDF documents may not be fully accessible. We are working to remediate these documents. We are actively working to address these limitations and improve accessibility across the platform.

5. Assistive Technologies

Our platform is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies: Screen readers (including JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver). Screen magnification software. Speech recognition software. Keyboard-only navigation. Our platform is designed to work with current versions of major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

7. Enforcement Procedure

If you are not satisfied with our response to your complaint, you can contact the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). The EHRC is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. Whilst africanstores.co.uk is not a public sector body, we voluntarily adhere to these standards as part of our commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

8. Technical Specifications

Accessibility of africanstores.co.uk relies on the following technologies to work with the particular combination of web browser and any assistive technologies or plugins installed on your computer: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WAI-ARIA. These technologies are relied upon for conformance with the accessibility standards used.

9. Assessment and Review

This statement was prepared on 12 February 2026 based on a self-assessment carried out by the africanstores.co.uk development team. We plan to commission an independent accessibility audit within the next 12 months. This statement is reviewed and updated at least once per year, or whenever significant changes are made to the platform.
