Breadnut is the seeded relative of breadfruit, a large, spiky, green tropical fruit from the tree Artocarpus camansi, grown across the Caribbean. Unlike breadfruit, it is prized not for its thin flesh but for the many large, starchy seeds packed inside, which are boiled or roasted and eaten like chestnuts, soft and nutty. The seeds must always be cooked before eating, never raw. It is also known as chataigne in Trinidad and katahar in Guyana.
