Ackee is a soft, creamy, pale yellow tropical fruit that tastes mild and is often compared to scrambled egg. Originally from West Africa, it became Jamaica's national fruit and the star of ackee and saltfish. It must only be eaten when fully ripe and naturally opened, as unripe ackee is toxic, which is why it is sold canned in the UK.
